Innovative Education Tax Credit Opportunity

Did you know that you have the incredible opportunity to directly impact the education of students in our community through the Innovative Education Tax Credit for Lewistown Public Schools?  The State allows you to receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit and donate directly to our school district, giving us the opportunity to enhance our educational programs that significantly benefit our student’s education experience.

Donations will be directed to Innovative Educational Programs that benefit our students through:

  • Enhanced transformational and advanced learning opportunities for our students;
  • Programs, services and equipment for students with disabilities;
  • Work-based learning partnership for our students;
  • Post-secondary credit or career certifications for our students; and
  • Technologies that improve student experiences and opportunities.

In 2023, the Legislature enhanced this program (HB408), making it more impactful than ever before.  By participating before the deadline of Wednesday, January 15, 2025, you increase your chances to receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit on your State income tax bill for 2025.

In 2024, $5 million was available for collection to public school districts statewide.  This year, $6 million is available to provide funding to school districts for innovative educational programs through tax credits.

An individual or business can donate up to $200,000 per year to qualify for the tax credit on their 2025 Montana State tax bill. The district will only accept donations approved by the Department of Revenue.

While the money is claimed by districts quickly, no district can claim more than 20% of the total, which means each district is eligible for $1.2 million in contributions for 2025.

Once a donation is pre-approved, Lewistown Public Schools will provide the donor with a tax credit receipt listing the amount of the tax credit and a confirmation code. Donors must include the confirmation number and receipt when claiming the tax credit on their tax return.
