Parent Notification of Routine Hearing Screening
Hearing screening is conducted at your child’s school. Pure tone screening is mandated for students in grades K, 1 and 10. Students in other grades will also be screened if they are new to the school, on the annual hearing recheck list, or referred by the school or parent/guardian. If your child is absent, unable to complete the pure tone screening, or does not pass the pure tone screening; they will be referred for a hearing rescreen. The Hearing Conservation Program audiologist will conduct the hearing rescreen and, in addition to the pure tone screening, may also conduct one or both of the following: Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs) Screening, which is a measure of cochlear (inner ear) function that does not require the child to respond and/or Immittance Screening, which measures the movement of the eardrum by putting positive and negative pressure into the ear canal. Please contact the school if an ear-related medical issue arises and that information will be passed on to the audiologist.

DID YOU KNOW...Memorial Day is a day honoring American Soldiers who died serving our country in wars?

Photo of US Flag waving in the wind.

  • Memorial Day, an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day honored military personnel who died in the Civil War (1861-1865). The holiday now honors those who died in any war while serving with the United States.
  • Several towns claim to be the originators of Memorial Day but in 1966, Congress declared Waterloo, New York, to be the birthplace of the holiday.

Lewistown Schools Utilize Lock Out Procedures

Keeping Schools Safe

On Monday, October 2nd, 2017, at approximately 12:00 p.m. the Lewistown School District was contacted by local law enforcement and advised of a potential threat. The reported threat was of an adult male, in a neighboring county, who was armed and had made threatening statements towards law enforcement.

Although there was no indication that the suspect was in or around the Lewistown area, as a precautionary measure, the Lewistown School District and it’s officials, decided to have all Lewistown schools go into a LOCK OUT status.

LOCK OUT is a safety procedure used by the School District to instruct students to return inside their schools. All exterior doors are locked, main entrances are supervised and visitors to the schools are identified before access is permitted. Activities and classes inside the school buildings proceed as normal.

The District was notified at approximately 1:40 p.m. that the suspect was taken safely into custody by law enforcement and the LOCK OUT status was cancelled. All schools have returned to their normal schedules and procedures. In addition, all buses will be running on their normal schedule.

The District is very proud of the response of all staff and students during the LOCK OUT and as always the safety of our students is the number one priority of the district.

Rick Wright

Photo from the Lewistown NewsArgus 2017

The Central Montana Education Center is hosting a wonderful learning opportunity to educate ourselves about one of our most difficult ,and hard to understand problems in our lives today, suicide.

Montana currently has the highest suicide rate in the United States and Tuesday, March 14, retired school psychologist Rick Wright will present and Tursday March 16th, will moderate a panel of professionals concerning suicide facts and the need for education and prevention.

Rick Wright is not new to the schools of Central Montana, retiring recently after decades of working with and coaching our students.

During the first night, information will be provided on signs and symptoms of individuals who may be at risk and how to help. Depression looks different for children, adolescents, and adults. Knowing those differences & being able to recognize them may help save a life.  The second night, a panel of professionals in the medical and mental health fields will speak to & take questions from the participants.

Rick's presentation and the later facilitation of a panel discussion on suicide facts, signs and prevention is highly recommended for educators, concerned family members and our community at large. The cost is $20 though the Central Montana Education Center with OPI Recertification credit available.

If you have questions please contact Diane Oldenburg at 535-9022.

Construction Academy home open for viewing

By NewsArgus Staff  |  May 7, 2016

Ron Peevey, the instructor of the Central Montana Construction Academy, and his students, invite the public to an open house on Thursday, May 12, between 3:30 and 6 p.m. The newly-built home is located at 812 Wendell Avenue, a few blocks north of the hospital and just past the Boys and Girls Club. If it rains, the event will be cancelled.

Fourteen Fergus High School students just completed the 1,920 square foot, three bedroom, two bath home. This model has beautiful oak cabinetry in the kitchen, which also features a large pantry and rolling island. The master suite features a nice walk-in closet and beautiful master bath. The home is designed with an open concept in the living, dining, and kitchen area and features oak trim accents throughout the home.

School Elections to be held May 3, 2016 vote

There will be a school election on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 for voters in both the Lewistown Elementary School District and Fergus High School District.  Polls will be open from 8:00 a.m to 8:00 p.m. in the lobby of Fergus High School.

School District voters will be asked to approve elementary and high school building reserved levies each in the amount of $98,000 per year for 10 years.  The purpose of the levy requests are to support District efforts in maintaining facilities and capital improvements in the next 10 years.  Similar levy requests were passed by voters in 2005 and just recently expired in 2015.

The amount of the potential levy's equate to approximately 8.17 mills in the elementary district and 7.54 mills in the secondary district.

A fact sheet for the building reserve fund elections is available to the public at this link.

Voters will not be asked for General Fund levies this year, in part to focus on the need for funds to maintain our aging infrastructure.

In addition to the Building Reserve Levies, there will be a Board of Trustee election.  There are three candidates who have filed for the two available 3-year terms.  They are incumbents Phil Koterba and Jennifer Thompson, as well as Joseph Kern.  Troy Kelsey has filed for the one open 1-year term.

Additional coverage of the 2016 Building Reserve Levy can be found at the Lewistown NewsArgus.

Financial Aid "Savviness"

Scholarship and Financial Aid “Savviness"

All Central Montana high school students and their parents are invited to come and learn about how students and families pay for college on Tuesday, January 12 @ 7:00PM in the Fergus High School Library. This includes information on how to best prepare to be competitive and earn scholarship dollars and how Federal Financial Aid works. Because college is expensive and loans are a common way for students to pay for a part of their education, a common sense approach to debt management will also be addressed.  Speakers will include Teresa Vaughn from Moore School, Debra Slagel from Fergus High School, and Megan Bartel from 1st Bank of Montana. Students and parents interested in attending should call Fergus High School at 535-2321 to register.

Parent-Teacher Conferences at Fergus High

Wednesday, November 4 and Thursday, November 5 are the scheduled dates for the fall Parent-Teacher Conferences at Fergus High School.  The Parent-Teacher Conference schedule is as follows:  Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday afternoon from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., and Thursday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.  The High School staff will again offer Eagle Renaissance Rewards for students during each session to further encourage parent attendance at conferences.

The format for all conferences will be more of a traditional classroom format with parents picking up their child’s schedule at the main office and then visiting with teachers in their individual classrooms.

The staff does ask parents to keep individual conferences within a five or six-minute time frame, but recognizes if more time is needed a parent can easily schedule an additional meeting time.  High School parents with specific questions about this year’s Parent-Teacher Conferences, or parents wishing to arrange an after-school conference with a teacher on a different day, may contact Principal Jerry Feller or Assistant Principal Jeff Elliott at the High School office at 535-2321.

Our resulting motto, "Excellence Today, Success Tomorrow," and its accompanying mission statement, provide the focus we need as we look to build student successes for the future.  However, as we celebrate our successes we look to our past and believe it too, is equally important.  We are reminded often that our character, our customs and our traditions are built on the spirit, devotion and high ideals of those former students and staff who went before us.
As you tour our website and develop a snapshot of what, and who we are, I hope you will feel the same high level of "Golden Eagle Pride" that those of us associated with Fergus High School have grown accustomed to.
